A NEW CENTURY
The Paris International Exhibition of 1900 was held to celebrate the beginning of the new century. It was the biggest exhibition Europe had ever seen. Special trains brought millions of people from all over France and other European countries to see all the latest inventions.
When the visitors got to the exhibition, they were transported along moving walkways and taken to displays from all corners of the world.
Raymond Abescat was nine years old when he visited the exhibition. “It really opened my eyes. It gave me the desire to travel.”
One of the highlights of the exhibition was the Palace of Electricity, with its hall full of lamps, generators and motors, and its grand façade lit up at night. Raymond thought it was wonderful.
“At home”, he said, “we used oil lamps and candles – we didn’t have electricity.”
Communication was becoming easier every day. The invention of the telegraph meant that news from all over the world was published in newspapers as soon as it happened.
